Pavel Belyayev was a Soviet Air Force pilot selected as a cosmonaut in the early days of space exploration. Born in 1925 in Shchyolkovo, Russia, he served with distinction as a fighter pilot during World War II. In March 1965, Belyayev commanded the Voskhod 2 mission, which performed the first extravehicular activity in human history. During the mission, he skillfully managed in-capsule operations while his crewmate Alexei Leonov conducted the pioneering spacewalk. Belyayev's calm leadership and technical expertise were crucial to the success and safe return of the mission. After retiring from the cosmonaut program, he held research and administrative roles until his death in 1970.

As director of the Boston Museum of Science for over 30 years, he expanded the institution's collections and public outreach. He authored numerous books and articles on mountain geography and photography techniques. Washburn's work not only advanced scientific understanding of glacial and mountainous landscapes but also inspired generations of explorers.
