Dubbed the “International Winter Sports Week,” the Games began in Chamonix on January 25, 1924 under the patronage of the IOC. They featured events including figure skating, ice hockey, cross-country skiing, and ski jumping. Over 250 athletes from 16 nations participated in the weeklong competition. Although retrospectively recognized as the first Winter Olympics, the event was originally separate from the Summer Games. The success of Chamonix 1924 led the IOC to officially designate future winter sports competitions as Winter Olympics. Chamonix set a precedent for international cooperation and athletic excellence in winter disciplines.
