Last member of the powerful Medici dynasty who safeguarded Florence’s artistic heritage by bequeathing the family collection to the Tuscan state.
Anna Maria Luisa de' Medici was born in 1667 in Florence as the youngest daughter of Cosimo III. As the sole surviving heir of the Medici line, she devoted her life to the arts and the preservation of her family's legacy. In her famous 'Family Pact of 1737', she ensured that the immense Medici art and treasure collections would remain in Florence forever. She married Johann Wilhelm of the Palatinate but returned to Tuscany after his death. Her bequest laid the foundation for the Uffizi Gallery and inspired future generations of art lovers. Despite her noble status, she lived modestly and dedicated herself to cultural philanthropy. Her death in 1743 marked the end of the Medici's direct lineage but cemented their enduring impact on European art.
