The last Carolina parakeet dies in captivity at the Cincinnati Zoo.

The final known Carolina parakeet dies at the Cincinnati Zoo, confirming the species’ extinction.
Once widespread across the eastern United States, the colorful Carolina parakeet faced habitat loss, hunting, and capture for the pet trade. The last captive individual, named Incas by zookeepers, died on February 21, 1918, at the Cincinnati Zoo. Although sightings of wild individuals continued sporadically, the species was never seen again and was declared extinct by the 1930s. The loss of the Carolina parakeet serves as an early example of human-driven extinction in North America. Conservationists today study its demise to inform efforts to protect other threatened species.
