Spanish explorer and diplomat
Spanish explorer and colonial administrator active in Central America during the early 16th century.
Pedro Arias Dávila, also known as Pedrarias Dávila, was born around 1440 in Spain. He served as governor of Panama and later of Honduras, overseeing the establishment of colonial settlements. He organized expeditions that expanded Spanish interests in the Caribbean and Pacific coasts. His administration was marked by both infrastructural development and harsh methods towards indigenous peoples. His rivalry with fellow conquistadors, notably Vasco Núñez de Balboa, led to political conflicts. He died in 1531, leaving a controversial legacy in the history of Spanish colonization.
