Greek Enlightenment scholar whose literary and linguistic reforms shaped modern Greek national identity.
Born in 1748 on the island of Chios, Korais studied in Smyrna and later at the University of Halle in Germany. He embraced Enlightenment ideals and dedicated his life to purifying and standardizing the Greek language. Through his translations and philological works, he provided a linguistic bridge between ancient and modern Greek. Korais also authored essays on philosophy, education, and political organization, influencing intellectual debates across Europe. He supported Greek independence and mentored early revolutionary leaders. Upon his death in 1833, his writings continued to inspire the Greek nation-building process.
