Terry Fox begins his Marathon of Hope across Canada to raise money for cancer research.
On April 12, 1980, Canadian athlete Terry Fox dipped his artificial leg in the Atlantic Ocean at St. John’s, Newfoundland, to start his Marathon of Hope. Inspired by his own battle with bone cancer, Fox aimed to run across Canada to raise funds and awareness for cancer research. He ran an average of 42 kilometers per day on his prosthetic leg, garnering national media attention and public support. Although his illness forced him to end the run in Thunder Bay, Ontario, his journey inspired millions. Fox’s legacy endures through annual Terry Fox Runs that have raised over $750 million worldwide.
