American engineer pilot and astronaut
American aeronautical engineer and test pilot who became the first pilot to exceed Mach 2, playing a key role in the X-15 rocket plane program.
Born in Berkeley, California, Albert Scott Crossfield (1921–2006) was a pioneering American aeronautical engineer and test pilot. He joined NACA, the predecessor of NASA, and as chief test pilot for the X-15 program in the late 1950s and early 1960s, he pushed the boundaries of high-speed flight. Crossfield was the first person to fly at twice the speed of sound, and his data and feedback proved vital to future space missions. After leaving NASA, he worked in industry and academia, training a new generation of aerospace professionals. His daring feats and technical expertise left a lasting legacy on American aviation and space exploration.
