Born in Alsace in 1836, Juilliard emigrated to the United States and built a successful career in the dry goods and textile industries. He became known for his generous support of musical institutions and artists. Upon his death in 1919, his estate funded the Juilliard Foundation, dedicated to advancing music education. The foundation’s endowment led to the creation of The Juilliard School in New York City in 1905. His philanthropic legacy continues to nurture generations of talented musicians worldwide.
