King Naresuan was a Siamese monarch celebrated for leading Ayutthaya to independence and his legendary elephant duel against Burmese forces.
Born as a prince of Ayutthaya, Naresuan ascended to the throne in 1590 after returning from captivity in Burma. In 1593, he famously faced the Burmese crown prince in a mounted elephant duel, securing Siamese sovereignty. Naresuan led multiple campaigns against Burmese incursions, expanding and defending his kingdom's borders. He implemented administrative reforms to centralize power and promote economic growth. Under his reign, Ayutthaya experienced a cultural revival, with flourishing Buddhist art and literature. Naresuan died in 1605 while leading a military expedition, and he remains a national hero in Thailand.
