Korean naval commander famed for his victories against Japan during the Imjin War.
Born in 1545 in Seoul, Yi Sun-sin rose through the ranks of the Joseon military due to his skill and leadership. As admiral of the Korean navy, he pioneered the use of the turtle ship and orchestrated decisive victories at Hansando and Myeongnyang despite overwhelming odds. His innovative tactics and unwavering courage helped stave off Japanese invasions from 1592 to 1598. Yi’s victories preserved Korea’s coastal defenses and safeguarded countless civilians. He died in battle on December 16, 1598, and is revered today as one of Korea’s greatest national heroes.

Born in Nova Scotia in 1827, William Hall joined the Royal Navy where he served during the Crimean War. At the Siege of Sebastopol, he displayed extraordinary courage under heavy fire, saving his commanding officer and fellow sailors. For his actions, Hall was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1857, becoming the first Black man and first Nova Scotian to receive Britain's highest military honor. He continued his naval career until retiring with the rank of lieutenant and was celebrated as a hero in both Britain and Canada. Hall died in 1904, and his legacy endures as a pioneering figure in Canadian military history.

Walter Tull broke racial barriers as one of the first black professional footballers in England, playing for Tottenham Hotspur and Northampton Town in the early 20th century. In 1914, Tull enlisted in the British Army, where he triumphed as a courageous officer, leading troops into battle during the First World War. Despite facing prejudice, he earned respect for his leadership and bravery at the Somme and in other fierce engagements. Tragically, his life was cut short in 1918 during the Spring Offensive, cementing his legacy as a pioneer both in sport and in military service.
