German-American businessman whose entrepreneurship led to the founding of the Anheuser-Busch brewing empire.
Eberhard Anheuser was born in Kreuznach, Germany, in 1805 and emigrated to the United States in 1838. He first built a successful soap and candle factory in St. Louis before purchasing a struggling brewery in 1860. Under his leadership, the enterprise was renamed Anheuser Brewery and grew rapidly with innovative techniques such as pasteurization and refrigerated rail transport. His son-in-law, Adolphus Busch, later joined the business and helped expand it into the Anheuser-Busch company. Anheuser's entrepreneurial vision established one of the world's largest breweries and set new standards for industrial beer production. He died on May 2, 1880, leaving a significant legacy in the American brewing industry.
