Clara Ayres was born in 1880 in Kentucky and trained as a registered nurse before answering the call to serve in World War I. In early 1917, she joined the United States Army Nurse Corps and was stationed at Camp Greene in North Carolina. During a field training demonstration, Ayres was seriously injured and succumbed to her wounds on May 17, 1917. She became one of the first American military nurses to die from injuries sustained in service. Ayres’s dedication highlighted the vital role of nurses in caring for wounded soldiers during wartime. She was honored posthumously by her fellow nurses and the U.S. Army for her courage and sacrifice. Her legacy endures as a symbol of commitment among military medical professionals.
