founded the New York Herald
Irish-born American newspaper publisher who founded the New York Herald and transformed journalism with sensational reporting.
Born in 1795 in County Antrim, Ireland, he emigrated to the United States as a teenager and began working in the printing trade. In 1835, he founded the New York Herald, introducing bold headlines, human interest stories, and expanded international coverage. He pioneered the use of telegraphy and a global network of correspondents, transforming journalism’s speed and scope. His sensational style increased newspaper circulation but drew criticism for prioritizing excitement over substance. He sold his interest in the Herald in 1867 and spent his later years in Europe. His innovations laid the groundwork for modern mass media and tabloid journalism.
