Gemini 4 launched in 1965 as NASA's first multi-day crewed mission and featured astronaut Ed White's historic spacewalk.
Gemini 4 lifted off on June 3, 1965, marking NASA's first multi-day orbital mission. Commanded by Jim McDivitt alongside pilot Ed White, the crew spent four days in space. During the mission, Ed White performed the first American spacewalk, spending 23 minutes outside the spacecraft tethered only by a 25-foot umbilical. This achievement showcased U.S. extravehicular capabilities at a critical time in the Space Race. The flight tested life support systems and orbital maneuvering techniques for future Apollo missions. Gemini 4's success paved the way for longer-duration flights and more ambitious lunar objectives.
