Born in 1346 into a prominent legal family, John Cavendish pursued a career in law and was appointed Chief Justice of the King's Bench in the late 1370s. He presided over important criminal and civil cases at a time of political unrest in England. Known for his legal acumen and administrative skills, he advised the crown on judicial reforms. His tenure coincided with discontent among peasants, culminating in the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381. Cavendish attempted to suppress the uprising but was captured and killed by rebels at Bury St. Edmunds on June 15, 1381. His death marked a dramatic episode in the clash between authority and popular revolt.
