Hamilton Hume was one of the first European-born explorers in New South Wales. In 1824, he partnered with William Hovell to lead an expedition from Sydney to Port Phillip Bay, mapping new inland routes. The Hume and Hovell journey provided critical geographic information that facilitated later settlement and overland trade. Hume’s deep understanding of the Australian bush and respectful relations with Aboriginal guides contributed to the expedition’s success. His explorations earned him acclaim and a place in Australian colonial history.
