He was imprisoned in 1994 by General Sani Abacha's regime, emerging as a symbol of the struggle for democracy in Africa. Abiola died in custody in 1998 under controversial circumstances, which intensified calls for civilian rule. Today, he is celebrated as a martyr for democracy and human rights in Nigeria.
