Othmar Spann (1878–1950) was a prominent Austrian sociologist, economist, and political philosopher. He developed a ‘universalist’ social theory that viewed society as an organic whole above its individuals. As a professor in Vienna and Heidelberg, Spann critiqued liberal democracy and promoted hierarchical governance. His ideas influenced interwar conservative, nationalist, and corporatist ideologies across Europe. Author of over fifty books and numerous essays, he left a complex intellectual legacy. After World War II, his work sparked renewed interest in the relationship between the individual and the state.
