French-Canadian naval officer and explorer who led early expeditions to Louisiana and the Gulf Coast.
Born in Montreal in 1661, Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville was a skilled seaman and soldier. He led French colonial expeditions that established Fort Maurepas in present-day Mississippi. His voyages mapped much of the Gulf Coast and strengthened France’s territorial claims in North America. D’Iberville’s naval successes against English and Spanish fleets earned him widespread fame. He founded the French colony of Louisiana and is remembered as a key figure in its early history. D’Iberville died during a campaign in the Caribbean in 1706.
