James Larkin White was an American miner born in 1882 who accidentally discovered the entrance to Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. Fascinated by the underground caves, he spent months exploring and mapping the vast chambers. White advocated for the preservation of the caves, leading to their designation as a national monument and later a national park. He served as the first park ranger and guided early visitors through the subterranean landscapes. His pioneering exploration brought global attention to one of America's most spectacular natural wonders.
