Accused of killing eight men, he escaped jail multiple times and became known for his daring escapes. Sheriff Pat Garrett ultimately tracked him down and shot him in July 1881. Billy the Kid’s life of crime and his early death cemented his status as a symbol of the lawless Wild West.
