Surveyors of the Connecticut Land Company name an area in Ohio "Cleveland" after Gen. Moses Cleaveland, the superintendent of the surveying party.

Surveyors of the Connecticut Land Company name a settlement on the Cuyahoga River 'Cleveland' in honor of their leader, Gen. Moses Cleaveland.
On July 22, 1796, surveyors from the Connecticut Land Company arrived in the Western Reserve region of Ohio. Led by General Moses Cleaveland, the team laid out townships and plotted land for future settlement. In honor of their superintendent, they named a growing settlement on the Cuyahoga River after Cleaveland, simplifying the original spelling to 'Cleveland'. This naming established the official identity of what would become a major city in northeastern Ohio. Cleveland’s strategic location on Lake Erie and its river access later fueled its growth as an industrial and transportation hub.
