On 8 August 1969, British photographer Iain Macmillan spent ten minutes atop a stepladder on Abbey Road's zebra crossing in London. He took the now-famous image of the Beatles walking heel-to-toe across the street for their Abbey Road album cover. Traffic was briefly halted while the band strode back and forth six times. The simple yet striking photo became one of the most recognizable images in music history. Abbey Road has since become a pilgrimage site for Beatles fans worldwide. The crossing was granted Grade II listed status in 2010, protecting its cultural heritage.
