Italian priest and missionary
Italian Jesuit missionary and explorer who mapped and established missions in the Pimería Alta region of New Spain.
Born in 1645 in Castelnuovo, Eusebio Kino joined the Society of Jesus and sailed to New Spain in 1681. Over his career, he founded multiple missions in present-day Sonora and Baja California, building rapport with indigenous communities and advocating for their rights. Kino produced some of the earliest detailed maps of the American Southwest, identifying potential routes and resources. His letters and cartography provided valuable ethnographic and geographical knowledge. Today, his legacy endures in the surviving mission churches and the name of the Kino region.
