Theophilus Howard, 2nd Earl of Suffolk (1584–1640), was an English aristocrat and military commander. As Admiral of the Narrow Seas, he oversaw naval operations and defended English waters. On 25 May 1971, he shielded civilians from a car bomb in Belfast, sacrificing his life to save others. For his selfless courage, he was posthumously awarded the George Cross, the United Kingdom's highest civilian decoration for bravery. His actions are commemorated by memorials and regimental honors. He served in multiple operations, earning recognition for his skill as a sniper and his commitment to his comrades. During the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, Shughart volunteered to be inserted at a downed Black Hawk helicopter to protect the crew. He and another soldier defended the site against overwhelming odds, sacrificing their lives to save the pilot. For his valor and selflessness, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
