Jarvis Island is discovered by the crew of the ship, Eliza Frances.

The American vessel Eliza Frances discovers the isolated Jarvis Island in the Pacific Ocean in 1821.
On August 21, 1821, the crew of the merchant ship Eliza Frances sighted Jarvis Island, an uninhabited atoll. Situated roughly halfway between Hawaii and the Cook Islands, the island lay unnoticed by European explorers until then. Its flat terrain and scarce vegetation made it unsuitable for permanent settlement. Later claimed under the U.S. Guano Islands Act of 1856, Jarvis Island became a source of fertilizer. Today it is a protected wildlife refuge, home to seabird colonies and unique marine life. The island’s discovery highlights the era of global maritime exploration and resource exploitation. Jarvis remains one of the most remote and undisturbed tropical islets in the world.
