On August 23, 1975, the Pontiac Silverdome officially opened in Pontiac, Michigan, 30 miles northwest of Detroit. At the time of its completion, it was the largest covered stadium in the world with seating for over 80,000 spectators. The Silverdome hosted the Detroit Lions of the NFL until 2001 and served as the site for Super Bowl XVI in 1982. Beyond football, it welcomed major concerts by The Rolling Stones, U2, and Madonna, as well as basketball games, ice shows, and conventions.
