Anatoly Kartashov was a Soviet Air Force pilot and cosmonaut trainee during the pioneering era of human spaceflight. Born in 1932, he graduated from the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy and served as a skilled fighter pilot. In the early 1960s, Kartashov was selected for cosmonaut training alongside the first group of Soviet space explorers. Although he never flew on a space mission, his rigorous work as a backup crew member and instructor was vital to program success. After leaving the cosmonaut corps, he continued to support space research and mentored new generations of pilots and engineers. His dedication exemplified the adventurous spirit of the space race. He passed away in 2005.
