The United States National Park Service is created.

On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson established the United States National Park Service to protect and manage the nation’s scenic and historical treasures.
President Woodrow Wilson signed the Organic Act on August 25, 1916, creating the National Park Service (NPS). The NPS was tasked with conserving natural and historic resources and providing for their public enjoyment. Stephen T. Mather was appointed as the Service’s first director, advocating for park infrastructure and visitor facilities. The agency unified the management of Yellowstone, Yosemite, and other federal lands under a single stewardship.
