German Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin patents his navigable balloon.

Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin secures a patent for his rigid airship design, laying the groundwork for modern dirigibles.
On August 31, 1895, German engineer Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin received a patent for his rigid airship design. The patent outlined a lightweight frame covered by an airtight envelope, allowing controlled flight. Zeppelin’s invention laid the technological foundation for the age of dirigibles. His first experimental airships flew in the following years, culminating in the famous LZ 1 in 1900. Zeppelins would later be used for both civilian passenger travel and military reconnaissance.
