Established by Aston Villa director William McGregor, the Football League began its first matches on September 8, 1888. Twelve founding clubs contested fixtures across England, including Preston North End and Aston Villa. The league introduced a structured schedule and points system, standardizing competition at a national level. Preston North End would go on to complete the season undefeated, earning the nickname The Invincibles. The new organization transformed soccer from a regional pastime into a professional sport with widespread appeal. It set precedents for leagues in other countries, influencing the global growth of football culture.
