Lionel Terray (1921–1965) was born in Grenoble and became one of France's most celebrated alpinists. He made first ascents of major peaks including Makalu, Annapurna II, and the North Face of the Eiger. Terray was known for his technical skill, endurance, and adventurous spirit. He authored the influential memoir Conquistadors of the Useless, inspiring climbers worldwide. He guided expeditions across South America and the Alps, contributing to mountaineering literature and safety practices. Terray died in a climbing accident in 1965, cementing his reputation as a fearless explorer.
