Explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo became the first European to set foot in what is now San Diego in 1542.
In October 1542, Portuguese navigator Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo led the first European expedition along the California coast. He anchored in a sheltered bay which he named San Miguel, now recognized as San Diego Bay. The landing marked the first European contact with the California region, opening the way for future exploration and colonization. Cabrillo's voyage provided valuable information about the Pacific coast's geography and indigenous peoples. Although Cabrillo died later that year, his pioneering journey left an enduring legacy in California history.
