The Kowloon–Canton Railway commences service.

In 1911, the Kowloon–Canton Railway began operations, forging the first direct rail link between Hong Kong and mainland China.
On October 5, 1911, the Kowloon–Canton Railway (KCR) officially opened, connecting the British colony of Hong Kong with Guangzhou (then Canton) in China. Stretching over 100 miles, the single-track line crossed border checkpoints and traversed challenging terrain. It facilitated the movement of passengers and goods, boosting regional trade and cultural exchange. Built under a joint British-Chinese agreement, the railway demonstrated early 20th-century engineering prowess and international cooperation. The KCR laid the foundation for Hong Kong’s growth as a major port and commercial hub.
