In Boston Harbor, the 44-gun United States Navy frigate USS Constitution is launched.

The USS Constitution, a 44-gun frigate destined to become the United States Navy’s flagship, was launched at Boston Harbor on October 21, 1797. Nicknamed 'Old Ironsides', she would earn fame in the War of 1812 for her resilience in battle.
Under the Naval Act of 1794, Joshua Humphreys designed the USS Constitution as one of the first six frigates of the United States Navy. On October 21, 1797, she slid into the waters of Boston Harbor amid celebrations and proud spectators. Constructed from live oak and white oak, the vessel earned its 'Old Ironsides' nickname during the War of 1812 when British cannonballs bounced off its hull. Constitution’s heavy armament and sturdy build allowed her to secure numerous victories against enemy ships. She also served as a flagship in multiple squadrons, projecting American naval power abroad. Over two centuries later, USS Constitution remains a commissioned ship and museum piece, symbolizing early US maritime heritage.
