The Football Association is founded.
The Football Association is established in England, laying down the first codified rules for association football.
On October 26, 1863, representatives from several football clubs and schools met at the Freemasons’ Tavern in London. They agreed to form The Football Association to unify the rules of the game. The new code forbade carrying the ball and hacking opponents’ legs, distinguishing it from rugby. Ebenezer Cobb Morley, later FA president, drafted the original laws. This foundational step standardized football across England and later influenced the global spread of the sport. The FA remains the oldest football association worldwide and continues to govern the game in England.
