American restaurateur and sports entrepreneur who co-owned the Chicago Cubs and developed Weeghman Park.
Born in 1874, Charles Weeghman founded a successful chain of lunch counters in Chicago called Weeghman’s Lunch System. In 1916, he became owner of the Chicago Whales of the Federal League and later acquired the Chicago Cubs. He financed and opened Weeghman Park, which would become the iconic Wrigley Field. Despite early success, financial setbacks in the 1920s led to his departure from baseball ownership. Weeghman died in 1938, remembered for his impact on both the restaurant industry and American baseball.
