The United States conducts its first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System at 2:00 p.m. EST.
At 2:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on November 9, 2011, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) activated the first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS). The exercise was designed to evaluate systems for delivering critical alerts over television, radio, and cable networks in the event of national emergencies. All broadcast outlets and cable providers were required to participate, transmitting a standardized two-minute alert followed by an end-of-message tone. The test assessed technical reliability, coordination among agencies, and public reach. Feedback from broadcasters and the public led to system improvements and updated protocols. Since then, annual tests have been conducted to ensure the readiness of the national warning infrastructure.
