Italian philosopher and author
Italian philosopher and author
Italian Renaissance philosopher famous for his 'Oration on the Dignity of Man'.
Giovanni Pico della Mirandola was born in 1463 into a noble family in Mirandola, Italy, and studied under the leading humanists of his time. In 1486, he drafted his 'Oration on the Dignity of Man', which became a landmark text of Renaissance humanism and argued for the potential of human achievement. Pico attempted to defend nine hundred theses on theology, philosophy, and magic before Pope Innocent VIII, which led to controversy and partial condemnation. He traveled extensively throughout Europe, engaging with scholars and ecclesiastical authorities. Pico’s syncretic approach to philosophy sought to reconcile different religious and philosophical traditions before his sudden death in 1494 at the age of 31.
