English barrister, journalist, and philosopher who championed early socialist thought and men's rights advocacy.
Born in 1854 in Lancashire, Ernest Belfort Bax studied law and practiced as a barrister before turning to journalism and writing. He became an influential socialist thinker and a member of the Social Democratic Federation in the 1880s. Passionate about gender equality, he controversially advocated for men's rights as a counterpart to the emerging women's suffrage movement. Bax authored numerous works on philosophy, history, and social theory, including a biography of Georg Hegel. His historical writings explored themes of social justice and the development of the human spirit. He died in 1926, leaving a complex legacy as both a radical socialist and a provocative social critic.
