American journalist, social activist, and co-founder of the Catholic Worker Movement who championed pacifism and aid for the poor.
Born in 1897 in Brooklyn, Dorothy Day started her career as a journalist and became known for her radical social commentary in the early 20th century. After a spiritual conversion in 1927 she embraced Catholicism and in 1933 co-founded the Catholic Worker Movement with Peter Maurin, establishing houses of hospitality for the homeless and destitute. Day advocated for nonviolence, workers' rights, and racial equality, often participating in civil disobedience and anti-war protests. Her writings in The Catholic Worker newspaper combined theology with practical calls to action. Despite criticism for her uncompromising stance, she inspired generations of activists and was nominated for sainthood in the Catholic Church. Day died in 1980, leaving a lasting legacy of faith-based social justice.
