Born in 1592, Nicholas Ferrar was educated at Cambridge before serving as a trader for the Virginia Company. In 1626 he embraced a life of devotion and founded the Little Gidding community in Huntingdonshire, where members lived in disciplined prayer, scholarship, and charity. Ferrar served as a deacon in the Church of England and hosted pious retreats for his family and visitors, including King Charles I. His community became renowned for its meticulous devotional practices, poetry, and manuscript copying. Ferrar’s blend of commerce, learning, and faith inspired Anglican devotional life until his death in 1637.

John Leamy was born in Ireland in 1757 and emigrated to Philadelphia, where he established himself as a leading merchant. He specialized in trading goods such as sugar, coffee, and manufactured items between the United States and West Indies. Leamy's firm secured contracts to supply the U.S. Navy and Army, boosting his prominence in transatlantic commerce. He supported the development of American shipping and played a role in financing early national infrastructure projects. Known for his business acumen and philanthropy, Leamy contributed to civic institutions in Philadelphia. He died in 1839, remembered as a pioneering figure in American mercantile history.

Born in New York in 1851, Charles Dow began his career as a reporter before co-founding a financial news service in 1882. He and Edward Jones launched Dow Jones & Company, publishing The Wall Street Journal. In 1896, Dow introduced the Dow Jones Industrial Average, a benchmark for tracking stock market performance. His analytical approach to market trends laid the foundations for modern technical analysis. Dow championed transparent financial reporting, shaping journalism and investment practices. He passed away in 1902, remembered as one of the most influential figures in financial journalism.
