Trusted by Henry IV and Louis XIII, he negotiated during the Thirty Years' War and shaped French overseas and European policy. A patron of religious art and architecture, he commissioned churches and charitable institutions across France. His dual role as churchman and statesman exemplified the intertwined nature of ecclesiastical and royal power in early modern Europe.

Austrian archduke and Archbishop-Elector of Cologne, known for his patronage of the arts and the young Beethoven.
Born in 1756 as the youngest son of Emperor Francis I and Maria Theresa. At age 16, he was appointed Archbishop-Elector of Cologne, becoming one of the Empire's prince-electors. He presided over one of the largest electorates and oversaw both religious and civil administration. Maximilian Francis was a notable patron of music and invited Ludwig van Beethoven to join his court chapel in Bonn. Under his leadership, the Cologne electorate became a center for musical innovation and Enlightenment ideas. He died in 1801, remembered for blending ecclesiastical duties with cultural patronage.
