Avery Dulles entered the Society of Jesus after a career in law and diplomacy, earning a doctorate in theology from the Gregorian University in Rome. He taught at Woodstock College and the Catholic University of America, authoring influential works on ecclesiology, revelation, and ecumenism. In 2001, Pope John Paul II appointed him cardinal, making him the first American Jesuit to receive that honor. Dulles served on numerous Vatican commissions and was a vocal advocate for dialogue between faiths and the role of the Church in contemporary society. His books, such as 'Models of the Church' and 'The Assurance of Things Hoped For,' remain standard texts in seminaries worldwide.
