Swedish explorer and author
Swedish naturalist and explorer who traveled to Asia and documented its flora and fauna under the guidance of Carl Linnaeus.
Pehr Osbeck (1723–1805) was a Swedish explorer and student of Carl Linnaeus who participated in a historic scientific voyage to southern China and Southeast Asia from 1750 to 1752. He collected numerous plant and animal specimens and made detailed observations on regional cultures. His published work, 'Dagbok öfver en Ostindisk Resa,' provided one of the earliest Western accounts of southern China's natural history. Osbeck’s contributions aided the development of botanical taxonomy and ethnography in Europe. Upon his return, he served as a parish priest and continued to write on natural sciences until his death.
