Akihiko Hoshide is a Japanese astronaut and engineer with JAXA who has participated in several space missions. Selected to the astronaut corps in 1999, he flew on STS-124 in 2008, contributing to the assembly of the International Space Station. He served as flight engineer on Expeditions 32 and 33 and commanded Expedition 65, becoming the first Japanese astronaut to command a space mission. During his time in orbit, Hoshide conducted multiple spacewalks, installing key components and performing maintenance tasks. With a background in mechanical engineering, he played a vital role in scientific experiments aboard the ISS. Hoshide's leadership and technical expertise have advanced human spaceflight cooperation between NASA and JAXA.
