1822年に生まれ、第7代マールバラ公爵の位を継承したジョン・スペンサー=チャーチルは、英国貴族院の議員として政治に参加した。保守党の一員として社会政策や地方行政に関与した。領地管理にも力を注ぎ、地元経済の発展に貢献した。芸術や慈善活動を支援し、社交界でも広く知られた存在だった。1883年に没し、後継者に爵位を譲った。
