1387年頃に生まれ、フランドル地方を中心に活躍した。遠近法や光の表現に優れた油彩技法を発展させ、細密描写で知られる。『アルノルフィーニ夫妻像』などで日常生活や宗教的モチーフを緻密に描写した。宮廷画家としてブルゴーニュ公フィリップ3世に仕え、宮廷文化にも影響を与えた。1441年に没し、西洋美術史に大きな足跡を残した。
