1729年ダブリン生まれ。 ケンブリッジ大学で学んだ後、イギリス議会の議員として活動。 『フランス革命に関する省察』などで保守主義の重要性を説き、漸進的改革を主張した。 政治社会学や経済学にも造詣が深く、多岐にわたる著作を残した。 その思想は現代の保守主義運動に大きな影響を及ぼしている。 1797年に没し、政治・哲学双方で高い評価を得た。
